The Department of Health and Human Services has released two reports that represent the first comprehensive national effort to measure quality of health care in the US and assess disparities in access to care. The reports, by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), provide baseline views of quality and differences in use of services by different populations. The UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing is conducting a 3-year continuing grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration called, "Improving the Nursing Care of Acutely Ill Elders." This project proposes to disseminate an educationally innovative method, the use of geriatric clinical simulations (GCS), successfully delivered at our campus, to rural and underserved regions of the state and beyond by partnering with the North Carolina Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The grant began on July 1, 2006 and runs through June 30, 2009. See the CE website for more information.

A Health Profile of Older North Carolinians, a joint publication of the State Center for Health Statistics and the Older Adult Health Branch, North Carolina Division of Public Health, and the North Carolina Division of Aging, is now available on the SCHS Web Site [PDF]. This report presents a demographic overview of the older population of North Carolina, using census data. Then several other available data sets are used to profile the health of older North Carolinians, addressing major health issues in this population: general health status, health care access, health behaviors/risk factors, heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, Alzheimer's disease, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, motor vehicle injuries, other unintentional injuries, suicide, arthritis, mental health, and osteoporosis/hip fractures.
Southern Gerontological Nursing Certificate Program prepares nursing faculty from the Southern Region in geriatric nursing and Web-based course design and delivery. This is a 432 contact hour program for nursing faculty in 16 member states and the District of Columbia. For more information, see their website.

To better address the educational needs of its members, the Emergency Nurses Association submitted a proposal and received a grant from Nurse Competence in Aging (a five-year initiative funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies [USA], Inc., and representing an alliance among the ANA, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing; see their website) to develop a Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE) program.
