24-month BSN Program Information & Questions
March 6, 2007
Question: how many complete applications were received for the 24 month vs. 14 month programs for the May start date
Answer: We received about 216 for the 24-month option and over 100 for the accelerated option.
Question: For a second degree applicant apllying to the 24 month program, what will be of most importance: the 6 pre requisite gpa or the 1st degree gpa. I know both are important, but which one will more emphasis be laid on for addmission purposes
Answer: We look at your cumulative GPA, determined by all your college work completed at time of application, and you science GPA, determined using the 5 science prerequisites (Psych, Stats, Anatomy, Physiology and Micro). We want to see good grades in the sciences.
Question: What was the average gpa for admitted May, 2007 applicants for the 24 month program?
Answer: We're not sure about the May final GPA, yet! However, the Jan. 2007 avg. GPA was approx. 3.3.
Question: I was interested in when the applicats for the 24 month cycle would be informed of their decision.
Answer: We are trying to get our recommendations to Undergraduate Admissions before the end of March so they can send notifications earlier than the April 15th posted notification date.
Question: Is there a limit to how many 2nd degree students you will accept into the 24 month program? Is it another factor considered when looking at an application?
Answer: We do not have quotas for undergraduate(without a degree) or 2nd degree applicants.
Question: Is a college gpa of 3.01 and a science gpa of 4.0 a competitive gpa
Answer: It can be. We look at other factors as well as GPA.
Question: Do u have special considerations for male applicants?
Answer: No
Question: Is there a limit to the number of transfer students you will take? I finished my 1st degree at another university.
Answer: We do not have spaces reserved for any particular group of applicants. Everyone competes for the 80 spaces.
Question: when will notifications be mailed for the may applicants?
Answer: please see response to Jenny's question above
Question: What is the average GPA for the 24-month program?
Answer: The average cumulative GPA for the last class (January) was around 3.3.
Question: Does a science pre requisite (A&P 11) in progress affect an applicant's admission?
Answer: We suggest that second-degree applicants have all prerequisites completed at time of application but this is currently not required. You can still be taking courses when you apply but each science prerequisite not completed may affect your competitiveness.
Question: If you can answer this, how many applications did you receive?
Answer: We received between 200 and 250 applications to the 24-month option for the May admission cycle
Question: How many slots are there for the 24 month program?. I know the expansion program is underway.
Answer: Approx. 80 applicants will be admitted for the May :)
Question: Does working as nurse aide increase your competitiveness?
Answer: Yes, it can enhance your competitiveness
Question: Are there other things one can do to enhance competitiveness for the november application if not accepted for may
Answer: We consider your volunteerism, your previous work experience, the answers to the two essay questions as well as your academics in the review.
Question: Does the university uphold affirmative action?
Answer: We follow all University requirements reguarding affirmative action and equal opportunity.
Question: Do you have plans of introducing a nurse anaesthesist program in the future?
Answer: I am not aware of any plans to offer that master's program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Question: I completed two years of americorps (full time volunteer) but not in healthcare. Do you prefer volunteer work in healthcare.
Answer: We do not specify what type of volunteer is needed...it is your choice and what is meaningful to you!
Question: Does the school of nursing give special cinsideration to unc hospital employees?
Answer: Not necessarily. Everyone is reviewed based on academic qualifications, and other aspects of the application. Where you have worked and what you have done may contribute to your competitiveness.
Question: Do you recaculate GPA including all transfer credits when considering applicants?
Answer: We take the total GPA hours and the total GPA points from all your transcripts, add them together and divide total points by total hours to determine your cumulative GPA
Question: What is the quality point for a B+ grade?
Answer: At UNC-CH it is 3.3. At another institution it may be just 3.0 of 3.27 or something close to that.
Question: out of the applications you receive for the 24 month program how many people still have one pre-req still in progress such as physiology?
Answer: The students who are currently undergraduates at UNC-CH will for the most part still be taking physiology. Undergraduate transfers from other schools may also still be taking one or more of the sciences. The number of second degree applicants still taking courses varies and we consider these factors when reviewing for admission.
Question: When will the school of nursing send out notifications to best qualified applicants. Will it have to go through the undergraduate admissions?
Answer: We will review all applications before making our admission decisions. We will then select for admit, waitlist and deny. All these recommendations will be forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions who will send official notifications. Our deadline for sending notifications is April 15th but we are trying to get the process completed well before that date.
Question: Thank you all for your time
Answer: You are very welcome. If you have any other questions, you can contact us directly at sonugadmissions@unc.edu
Question: So, when is the final date for people on the waitlist to hear a response?
Answer: The waitlist is in effect until classes begin. Anyone on the waitlist can be offered admission up to and including the first day of classes. After that time the waitlist is no longer in effect.
