24-month BSN Program Information & Questions
March 18, 2008
Question: I want to be a CRNA (certified registered nursing anesthesist) what program would you advise me to go toward?
Answer: CRNA is a graduate nursing program. Your best bet would be pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the outset and the apply to the masters CRNA program.
Question: How difficult is it to get in?
Answer:
Our program is competitive in that we have at least 3-5 applications for each opening each cycle. We favor good academic records, volunteering and a commitment to the values of the Nursing profession.
Question: When can admissions decisions be expected?
Answer: Notifications will be mailed by April 15th but hopefully by the end of March
Question: I'm enrolling in Durham Tech community college now. I am planning to apply to School of Nursing at UNC next year as junior( BSN undergraduate ). Do I have to take SAT ?
Answer: You will need to check with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to see if this is requried for transfer to UNC-CH but the School of Nursing does not require SAT for consideration for Nursing admission
Question: When can admissions decisions for the 24month BSN program (the May class) be expected?
Answer: Notifications will go out by April 15th but hopefully we can get them out sooner, maybe by March 31
Question: Could you offer any insight as to how many people the program will consist of (the 24 month BSN program starting in May) and about the average gpa?
Answer: We will enroll 72 students for May 2008. We will not know the average GPA until we know the final make-up of the class. Averages have been running around 3.4 recently
Question: I came to America, when I was 14. Can Foreign language classes be waived?
Answer:You would need to contact Dr. Fred Clark to request a waiver of the foreign language requirement.
Question:
My high school GPA is not high. It is 2.6. Is it really bad ?
Answer: We do not look at high school GPA for consideration to the Nursing program as a junior. If you are applying as a freshman to UNC-CH you would need to talk to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions about your chances
Question: I'm Durham Tech community college student. Can I use and follow UNC post fall 2006 curriculum worksheets and bulletin?
Answer: Yes, you would be accountable for the post-2006 general education requirements
Question: Could you talk in general about the admissions committee process? How does it work?
Answer: All complete and eligible applications are presented to committee with a recommendation and discussion. Of the applications recommended for admission, 72 are selected for admission and a number of remaining applicants are placed on a wait list. If an applicant offered admission declines, someone is selected from the wait list
Question:
Are community college online and hybrid classes transferable to UNC ?
Answer: The hybrid lab science courses offering on-campus labs are acceptable for our Nursing science requirements. Any non-lab science course offered in an online version should be acceptable
Question: How about non-science courses like English and History...?
Answer: Yes, non-science courses as long as they are equivalent to UNC-CH courses are acceptable in an online format
Question: Would previous work experience in the healthcare field enhance an application or offset a weaker gpa?
Answer: It would definitely enhance an application. How much it would "offset" a weaker academic performance would depend probably on the overall strength of the application
Question: I'm taking some classes in Durham Tech and some classes in other communtiy college. does dual enrollment look bad?
Answer:
No it doesn't. We realize there are lots of situations that could make this your only option. You may wish to talk about this in the optional essay question
Question: Thank you
Answer: You are welcome. If you have any other questions, you can contact us at sonugadmissions@unc.edu directly.
Question: Can you tell me how many applications you received for the May program?
Answer: around 200 for the BSN
