Accelerated BSN Program Information & Questions
March 20, 2007

Question: Is there any means that i can acces the admission recomendation list
Answer: No, you must wait until you receive written notification.

Question: Do clinicals take place even during times when classes are not in session (for example, during the break between summer II and fall)?
Answer: No, you receive regular university breaks.

Question: When all is said and done, how many students will be in our cohort of the accelerated program?
Answer: We will enroll no more than 33 students.

Question: is there an application fee? how much is it?
Answer: Right now the application fee is $70.00. It may increase for the 2008 application but we will not know that until the application is available in June.

Question: Question re uniforms - I have a white uniform from my nursing assistant training. Does that meet the specifications? If not, where can I find the specifications?
Answer: It probably will be fine. We require white scrubs and most people chose the tunic and pants.

Question: Has anybody applicant to the 24 month program been notified as of now?
Answer: I do not think that process is at that point yet.

Question:: If accepted, how much is the deposit?
Answer: An enrollment deposit of $100.00 is expected.

Question: when will we need uniforms?
Answer: I think you will need a lab coat for your first term skills training but I do not think you will need the scrubs until the second term.

Question: How many applicants were accepted for the 24 month program
Answer: We will enroll no more than 83 students into the May 24-month cohort.

Question: Can I assume you'll provide information on submitting the deposit during the preorientation?
Answer: The official admission letter you receive from Undergraduate Admissions will contain information on submitting your enrollment deposit.

Question: When will the notifications for the 14-month option be sent out?
Answer: That process in in the works so notifications should be sent out soon.

Question: Do you have any stats on what percentage of students from the 14 month option pass boards?
Answer: So far it has been running really close to 100% for that group

Question: Will any of our courses include students from the 24-month program?
Answer: Yes, under our new process accelerated and 24-month students will share some classes

Question: How many completed applications did you receive for the 14 month program?
Answer: I think we had around 180

Question: do you accept the same number of students for each matriculation?
Answer: We will for the next few years - 30+ accelerated and 80+ 24-month for each May and January

Question: I have been accepted to other nursing programs which require deposits before certain dates. I want to know the most probable date that notifications will be sent?
Answer: All I can tel you is that the process is ahead of schedule for both the accelerated and the 24-month option but I cannot tell you exactly when official notification will be sent. It appears it will probably be by the end of March.

Question: Do you know how many students were selected for the May 14-month cohort?
Answer: We will enroll no more than 33

Question: what is the average GPA for the students in the 14month and 24month programs?
Answer: We do not have the figures for the May 2007 students but the January 2007 students ran around 3.3 cumulative for 24-month and 3.5 cumulative for the accelerated

Question: What are the typical odds for a student on the waiting list?
Answer: That all depends on so many factors it is hard to guess. In previous years we had gone to the waitlists. For January we did not as much. With our new process of admitting twice each year we do not yet have a feel for the likelihood of movement from the waitlist.

Question: What was the percentage of admitted male applicants for both options for this may admissioin?
Answer: We usually run about 7% male students overall in our program. The number in each option varies.

Question: How many male applications were filed this may
Answer: Quite frankly we have not run the numbers yet. I am sure it is less than 7% of the total but the final representation in matriculations is usually not indicative of the representation in submitted applications. We do not advantage male applicants but we have had quite a few very competitive ones lately.

Question: Is there a table with community college transfer equivalencies for the prerequisities or do they usually transfer easily?
Answer: You can find information on transfer at the Undergraduate Admissions homepage - go through the links for transfer equivalencies and then look for the listing for NC Common Curriculum

Question: I had to resend my transcript to the son, how can I find out if CH received a transcript. Do they look at my transcript if I'm accepted to the SON?
Answer: Your homepage should show if your transcripts were received. If not you can email me directly or call and can look it up.

Question: So, if my homepage shows "no missing items," I shouldn't worry? - and that includes the University transcript?
Answer: As far as I know that should mean you have submitted all transcripts needed and all other documentation required by Undergrad Admissions. If you were missing pre-requisite courses, you would have gotten an email directly for the system stating which ones were not satisfied and telling you to contact me.

Question: I am finishing up the cultural diversity pre-req via an on-line course through Alamance Community College. That class ends May 8. I understand that my transcript needs to arrive to the SON by May 15. I will speak with the ACC transcript office to make sure it gets to you quickly, however, can you accept a fax from them followed by the hard copy if dates get squeezed?
Answer: If you cannot meet the May 15th deadline, you will need to submit something in writing. We also can accept a fax or a grade report but would still need the official transcript ASAP.

Question: Once admitted into the nursing program, is there a pre-test you have to take. I thought I remember seeing something on the web site about a some type of pre-test.
Answer: Once you are matriculated, we give some post-admission tests to determine the level of competence of the class in certain areas. This in no way impacts your admission and is done to alert us to any potential weak areas early on.

Question: Are there many scholarships available to male nursing students?
Answer: There may be some but I do not have a list. You could investigate at the Association of Male Nurses website. Also, since males are considered a minority in the Nursing school and profession, you may be eligible for something in that area. Second-degree Accelerated students do not have a lot of scholarships available - mostly loans and the educational loan program offered by UNC Hospitals.

Question: Is it mandatory to have had the cultural diversity completed before May's matriculation or is this a class we can take once admitted into the program?
Answer: That course as well as all other pre-requisites must be completed by the time you matriculate.

Question: will a transcript of this session be available online when we're finished here?
aterry: Yes.

Question: Anna, Andrea, thanks for conducting this on-line information session. It has been very helpful.
Answer: You are most welcome. If you think of any questions after the session ends, you can email me directly at terry@email.unc.edu

Question: You previously stated that the notifications for the May 14-month cohort will be sent out soon. Does this means that the students have been selected and just waiting on notification via admissions?
Answer: That process is ahead of schedule and we anticipate notifications being sent from Undergraduate Admissions by the end of March (hopefully). I really cannot say more.

Question: is the scholarship situation the same for the 24month option?
Answer: For second-degree applicants it is probably the same. For the most part, educational loans would be your main source of financial aid unless you find a private funding agency or support from a hospital in NC.

Question: When will martricuiation be held
Answer: Matriculation is as of the first day of classes - May 15th for the summer.

Question: Let me add my thanks for this session, as well.
Answer: You are welcome. There have been a lot of great questions today.

Question: We are really in suspense
Answer: I know and I can appreciate your anxiety but unfortunately I am not able to release any decisions.
