Accelerated BSN Program Information & Questions
June 5, 2007
Question: I am possibly spending the next year in Phoenix, AZ as a member of a service program. During this time, I am hoping to take a nutrition course.
Answer: You possibly can get exemption from our required Nutrition course by presenting the syllabus from this course at time of admission.
Question: Will I have difficulty getting my credits transferred to UNC from a school in Phoenix?
Answer: We will be glad to look at any college level work you do at other schools. I will also be glad to let you know if a course you would like to take will be transferable.
Question: I'm concerned about the GPA requirement. I can still apply even though it might not be exactly 3.0, correct?
Answer: If you apply with a GPA lower than 3.0, we will not review your application. If you think you can raise it with an additional semester of college work, you should wait until the next application cycle so you can present a 3.0 at time of application.
Question: OK! I am not sure which school I will take nutrition at until I get to visit AZ. Do you recommend a 4-year school over a community college?
Answer: We do not prefer one over the other. Community colleges with nursing programs are more likely to offer a course that would be acceptable over a 4-year institution without a nursing program.
Question: Even if I went on to earn a masters degree with a 3.5 GPA?
Answer: We will use all post-secondary work you have completed to calculate your cumulative GPA so your masters work may be enough to raise your cumulative over 3.0.
Question: Is that for cumulative graduating GPA or Science GPA?
Answer: The 3.0 cumulative GPA for application to the ABSN is calculated on all your college-level grades. We have no minimum science GPA requirement.
Question: Great. One more question. You also require High School transcripts too, correct?
Answer: Yes, you are to send an official high school transcript to the UNC-CH Office of Undergraduate Admissions when you apply. If you graduated from UNC-CH undergraduate, this is not required.
Question: What fundamental areas should the nutrition course cover?
Answer: It should cover therapeutic nutrition or medical nutrition - content to deal with nutrition, health and disease rather than just health eating.
Question: Even graduates have to send High School transcripts?
Answer: Yes, since you are applying for admission to an undergraduate program (BSN) you are required to comply with the requirements for admission into that program.
Question: For the accelerated second BSN?
Answer: Yes, the accelerated option is a reworked format of the junior and senior years of our 4-year nursing program. Students entering UNC-CH as freshmen majoring in Nursing do not take Nursing classes until the junior and senior years. We can admit bachelor's degree holders into this program at the junior level to take only the Nursing portion but you are still applying to transfer to UNC-CH into an undergraduate program. All requirements apply to first degree as well as second-degree applicants.
Question: After the 2nd BSN, how long does it take to get an MSN?
Answer: After graduation from any of our BSN options, you must work as a registered nurse for at least one year before beginning any of our master's options.
Question: What month does the accelerated option begin? For example, could one apply to the May program?
Answer: We admit to begin twice each year - to start classes in January and also in May.
Question: Are there housing options for graduates?
Answer: Yes, you should be able to find housing on campus as well as off campus. The Housing Office at UNC-CH has a good web page. You can access it from the main page at www.unc.edu.
Question: How important is community service to being admitted?
Answer: We look at community service and volunteerism as an enhancement to your application. We like to see that it is important enough to an applicant to try and make time for it on a routine basis.
Question: What is the process to apply for the accelerated BSN program?
Answer: Our application is available at our website and is submitted electronically by the deadlines. You have to have earned a bachelor's degree in another, present a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and satisfy the 6 prerequisites we have for second-degree applicants.
