24-month BSN Program Information & Questions
June 26, 2007
Question: Hi, what are the sciences that are most important to the committee?
Answer: We look specifically at your grades in Psychology, statistics, anatomy, physiology and microbiology. These grades are used to determine your science GPA. We do also look at your overall performance in sciences and would like to see it at a consistently high level.
Question: Are there any plans to expand the program? If so when?
Answer: We have just expanded the program to admit twice a year with an annual increase in admission from 120 to 160. We probably will not increase again for a few years.
Question: I have taken First Aid, Nutrition, Introduction to Health Care, and Fitness. Are these classes considered sciences?
Answer: We consider Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Physics as sciences. Nutrition is a Nursing curriculum course so we would be interested in how you performed in that class.
Question: Would a person with a GPA of 3.14 be considered for the program?
Answer: That GPA is certainly above the minimum for consideration. Your application, if complete, would be considered, and if you are only looking at that specific item, would most likely be in the competitive range.
Question: Is there a part time track? If so, what is the minimum GPA for that program?
Answer: We only offer a full time program.
Question: If I apply for the January 2008 class and am denied, can I apply for the May 2008 class or do I need to wait a year to reapply?
Answer: You can apply for the May 2008 class if you are not admitted to the January 2008 class. We do not require any waiting period.
Question: Do you all plan to require GRE scores in the future?
Answer: Since our BSN options are undergraduate programs, even if you are applying as second-degree, GRE scores are not necessary.
Question: I have volunteered at an animal shelter, not a health care facility. Would that be acceptable for the committee?
Answer: As long as you are doing something that gives back to the community and for which you are not paid, we will consider it volunteering. You do not need to do something in healthcare, just something that you like. The advantage of a healthcare activity is the exposure it gives you to the profession.
Question: Would a C grade in Anatomy lecture and lab would stop a person from being accepted to the program?
Answer: It would not necessarily stop you for being accepted. You would need good grades and the rest of the science prerequisites and good grades overall. This question is difficult to answer without seeing your entire transcript and knowing if you are applying as a first degree or second-degree student. You may wish to contact me to request a transcript evaluation. (terry@email.unc.edu)
Question: How is the GPA is calculated?
Answer: Your cumulative GPA is calculated based on all college work completed at the time of application. We take all GPA hours completed and all GPA points earned and divide the points by the hours. Your science GPA is determined using the hours and grade points earned in psyc, stat, anatomy, physiology and mcro.
Question: I am concerned because I got C in Anatomy lecture and lab. However, my GPA is 3.14 overall. Any advice you can give me before submitting my application?
Answer: You could retake an anatomy course and complete it before the application deadline or you could retake one in the fall and indicate in the application that you are retaking the course to get a better background in the content.
If you have any specific questions not answered in the transcripts, please contact Anna Terry.
