Undergraduate Student Scholarship/Financial Aid Process:

STEP 1: Read the general information below about Scholarships and Financial Aid for BSN students.
STEP 2: Contact the University Office of Scholarship and Student Aid at (919) 962-8396 or visit the web site for more information.
STEP 3: Visit the Department of Education's Student Guide web page and complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
STEP 4: Pursue funding sources outside the University, including professional associations. Many sources can be found on the Internet. Several are listed on our financial aid links page.

 

Students pursuing their first undergraduate degree

SCHOLARSHIPS  "free money" you may be awarded, based on financial need and academic achievement, including the James M. Johnston Scholarship, a distinguished scholarship, which meets full need for students with the best academic credentials. See the listing of undergraduate scholarships for descriptions of the various scholarships available to undergraduate students.

GRANTS  "free money" you may be awarded, based on financial need from federal state, and University funds.

LOANS  money you borrow, from University loan programs and outside lenders. Loans with interest and principal deferred while enrolled are based on financial need. Loans on which you pay only the interest while enrolled are not based on need.

Students who have already obtained an undergraduate degree

LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD SCHOLARSHIP  Need-based scholarship up to $2000 per year available to graduate and undergraduate students. Students with an undergraduate degree complete only the FAFSA form to apply.

JAMES M. JOHNSTON SCHOLARSHIP  Available to graduate students. Awarded on recommendation of the School of Nursing and does not require the need-based application forms. Also refer to the listing of undergraduate scholarships.

Other Types of Assistance

Scholarships, grants, and loans are available from donors and agencies outside UNC. Students make application directly to the donor and should be aware of deadlines and application requirements. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid has a Student Aid Resource Center with information about outside resources but information is also readily available on the Web.

Special student aid programs for nursing students are available from the state of North Carolina. Contact the NC State Education Assistance Authority at PO Box 14223, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, 919-549-8614 or on-line at www.ncseaa.edu. The Nurse Education Scholarship Loan Program (NESLP), is based on need. Refer to application instructions below for the basic requirements. Students interested in this program will also need to write to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid to indicate that they are aware of the program requirements and wish to be considered for the NESLP.
