When you complete your nursing program, you will need to take a state-administered examination in order to become licensed as a Registered Nurse. You must attain a nursing license before you can work as a nurse. Once you've attained your license, you may choose to pursue certification in an area of specialization. Certification in your field may be mandatory or optional, depending on the state you live in and your area of specialization.
