Alumni Share Experiences with Nursing Exploration Week Students
Abby Ensign, BSN '00, Derek Chrisco, BSN '91 and Meg Gambrell, BSN '01
participated in a panel discussion with nursing exploration week participants
this summer. The alumni spoke about their particular career paths and
took questions from the audience. This was a great chance for the high
school students who took part in the program to learn about the field
from those practicing in it. The informal nature of the evening led
to lots of discussion and fun.
Previous Livas Award Winners Enjoy Lunch with Honored Guests
The
SON’s annual leadership award for students was named in honor of
local businessman and nursing supporter George Livas, after his death
in 1956. In January several recent Livas Award recipients came together
for a luncheon with Dean Cronenwett and the Livas family. These alums,
once leaders in the classroom, are now becoming leaders in nursing practice,
education and research. The lunch was a great opportunity for them to
share their experiences since graduating and learn more about the history
of the award.
Alumni Weekend 2004
Alumni
Weekend is a chance to relive the student experience with former classmates,
see the latest innovations in nursing education and recapture the feeling
of the Carolina campus on game day. Over 120 alumni, family members, students
and friends enjoyed the Alumni Day festivities at the School on October
30; many of these participants were also celebrating class reunions. Touring
the Biobehavioral Laboratory, practicing on the Human Patient Simulator,
attending a session on student international opportunities and enjoying
the annual alumni awards presentations were highlights of the day.
Alumni Board of Directors Sets Agenda for Future
The
School of Nursing Alumni Association Board of Directors held its annual
meeting on Friday October 30 at the Carolina Club. Working committee plans
for the year include a focus on public service and association participation
in this important area of the school’s mission. Identifying previous
board members and creating an alumni association history is also a goal.
Promoting continuing education and opportunities for alumni networking continue
to be a priority as does providing support for students and faculty. The
board continues to look for ways to encourage reunion activities and alumni
mentoring.
