Swift-Scanlan Receives Grant and Fellowship Award
Dr. Theresa Swift-Scanlan has received a UNC NIH/KL2 award and a Susan G. Komen grant to study DNA methylation in breast tumor subtypes and to test these findings in pre- and post-menopausal women in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study.
Breast cancer is comprised of many subtypes, many of which are incompletely defined.
The inability to distinguish among subtypes poses a significant challenge to prognosis and treatment planning. The study of differences in methylation across breast cancer subtypes holds promise as a genetic marker of individualized breast cancer risk and prognosis.
Hodges' Pilot Study Receives 2nd Year of Funding
Dr. Eric Hodges was recently awarded a 2nd year of funding for his ongoing pilot study “Maternal Feeding Responsiveness During Infancy and Toddlerhood.” He was also one of 20 up-and-coming nutritional scientists that were selected for the Dannon Nutrition Leadership Institute from held June 6-11 in Maryland.
Yeo Begins New Pilot Study
Dr. SeonAe Yeo has been awarded funding by the URC for her pilot study "Effect of Prenatal Stretching and Autonomic Responses Associated to Preeclampsia." Preeclampsia is a syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of hypertension and proteinuria in the latter half of pregnancy and a mother's risk may be reduced by physical activity. This study will attempt to determine the immediate effects of a 30-minute prenatal stretching exercise (PSE) session on ANS activity, blood pressure (BP), and heart rate variability (HRV).
