Our sincere congratulations to SON alum and adjunct professor Dr. Cathy Madigan, ’14 DNP, as she completes her first month on the job as chief nursing officer and senior vice president at UNC Hospitals today. Dr. Madigan took over the role of CNO on February 1, after serving thirteen years at UNC Hospitals, first as director of cardiac services, and later as vice president of nursing and associate chief nursing officer. Global Perspective, Local Touch: Alum Minh Nguyen ’10 Featured by UNC School of Medicine

More than a decade ago, Minh Nguyen came to the United States as a high school exchange student. He has since followed a path to the UNC School of Nursing, a nursing position in the Burn Intensive Care Unit at UNC Medical Center’s renowned North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, and the UNC School of Medicine, where today he is training to become a physician. SON Organizations Host 3rd Annual Mentor Mixer

The Third Annual Student and Alumni Mentor Mixer was held on Saturday, February 6 at Carrington Hall. Twenty-eight alumni and 80 students were in attendance. The alumni brought knowledge from UNC Healthcare, Duke, the VA and more in specialties as diverse as oncology, education, psych mental health and public health. Interim Dean Donna Havens offered words of welcome followed by comments from Dr. Bev Foster and Kathy Moore. Congratulations to Cheryl Woods Giscombe, PhD, RN, PMHNP-BC, who was named the first Melissa and Harry LeVine Family Distinguished Professor of Quality of Life, Health Promotion and Wellness effective January 1, 2016. Thomas N.P. Johnson III Establishes War Heroes’ Nursing Scholarships

The School is so pleased to announce the War Heroes’ Nursing Scholarships Fund, generously established by Thomas N.P. Johnson III to support five named merit scholarships for graduate or undergraduate nursing students at the UNC Chapel Hill. The inaugural recipients of these scholarships all participate in SON’s newly formed military student group. Of his generosity Tom explains that he first understood the important contributions of nurses during his service as a Vietnam-era medic in the U.S. Air Force, an experience that would shape his later interest in supporting nursing education. SON Alumni Association Holds Annual Meeting

On Friday, November 6, the School of Nursing hosted its annual Alumni Association Board of Directors meeting at the Siena Hotel in Chapel Hill. The day-long meeting was presided over by President-Emeritus, Roulhac Johnson, BSN ’00.
