SON Alumni Serve as Mentors at Mock Interview Event

October 21, 2015 | In Alumni, Students

Preparing for life after graduation can be stressful for any student. In the midst of classes, clinicals and boards, it can be almost impossible for nursing students to simply find the time to ponder “life after.” To prepare our students for this next step, the Undergraduate Student Governance Council incorporated a day of professional comportment into their yearlong Get Hired series.

Inviting professionals who occupy varying positions within the nursing field, the Council held a workshop entitled
“Strategies for Transitioning from Student to Professional Nurse.” Sessions ranged from panel discussions on professional culture and climate to career fair preparation and mock interviews. Students were given valuable insight into every aspect of the hiring process, from inquiries and applications to resumes, cover letters and even how to deal with rejection in a professional manner.

To provide a more realistic atmosphere, nurse managers and recruiters from UNC Health Care, Moses H. Cone and other area facilities served not only as panelists, but also as the interviewers. During mock interviews, students were given a simulation of what interviewers will ask and how they will respond. From their entrance to the final handshake, students were evaluated and given direct feedback on how they could strengthen their skills to excel in the interview process.

SON alumni mentors Leslie-Anne Bandy, BSN ’08, Roger Saunders, BSN ’79, Gwen Waddell-Schultz, BSN ’70, MSN ’76, Gretchen Dawson, BSN ’06, MSN ’14, Carla Jones, DNP ’14, and Ron Riggle, BSN ’95 served as panelists and interviewers.
