ACADEMIC POLICIES IN THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM

Students are expected to read and otherwise prepare for class seminars and be able to actively participate in class discussion and scholarly informative debate.

All students are expected to be familiar with the Honor System of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and abide by it fully. For doctoral students, this includes the requirement that submitted papers must be written by the student (unless there is a coauthor) and reflect the students’ own synthesis of ideas and meaning. Special attention should be given not to plagiarize the work of others such as copying word for word ideas written by another without using quotes and a reference, as well as improper or inadequate referencing of ideas in papers or presentations.

It is a policy of the University that every course must have a final examination or a final paper or project. Final examinations, if given, are usually scheduled by the instructor on the same day and time that the course was held during the semester. Final examination dates may be within the semester or after courses end. The day and time of the final examination should be identified in the course syllabus. If conflicts arise with scheduling, students are encouraged to discuss this with the instructor as soon as feasible.
