Academic Eligibility Regulations
Graduate Students
Academic Eligibility
If, in the judgment of the academic program and the Administrative Board
of The Graduate School, a student fails to make satisfactory progress towards
the completion of the degree or to demonstrate sufficient promise in the discipline,
the student will not be allowed to continue in The Graduate School. Registration
in following semesters for academically ineligible students will be cancelled
automatically.
A student becomes academically ineligible to continue in The Graduate School
for the following reasons:
- S/he receives a grade of F, F*, or nine or more hours of L.
- S/he fails a written or oral comprehensive examination for the second
time.
Please see the University
Graduate Handbook for specific details.
When special circumstances warrant, a student made academically ineligible
under the conditions stated above may be reinstated upon petition initiated through
the student’s academic program. Students and academic program representatives
must fill out the Request for Reinstatement to Graduate School Form. (LINK in
form)
The student’s director of graduate studies must submit the petition
together with a statement endorsing or declining to endorse the student’s
request to The Graduate School. Final approval rests with The Graduate School.
After academic eligibility reinstatement, any subsequent grade below P will result
in the student becoming academically ineligible again.
Continuing Education Students
A postmaster's student will be unable to proceed in their
program of study if he or she receives a grade of F, or if
he or she receives a grade of L in more than 20% of the total
credits in the student's plan of study.
