Special Registration Regulations

Adding Courses

Courses may be added only during the official add period.

Dropping Courses

Forms to drop a course are available in the Office of Admissions and Student Services for use after the telephonic system closes (See the Registrar's Calendar page for deadlines). Students must maintain at least one course during the fall and spring semesters in order to maintain enrollment.

International Graduate Students

All international applicants, except those from other countries where English is the language of instruction and those who have received a degree from a university in the United States (excluding institutions in U.S. trust territories), must provide proof of English-language proficiency by receiving acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The required minimum total score on the TOEFL is 550 (213 on the computerized version), with a minimum score of 50 for each of the three sections of the TOEFL test.

All new students must take the University's English Proficiency Test before registering for their first semester of study unless they have received a total score of 625 or higher on the TOEFL test (250 on the computerized version), hold a degree from a U.S. institution (excluding institutions in U.S. trust territories), or are a resident of a country where English is the language of instruction. Students taking the English Proficiency Test also must enroll in and attend a noncredit course, "English for Foreign Students" (English 601). This course requirement is waived for those receiving adequate scores on the University's Proficiency Test.

The following international students are exempt from taking the English Proficiency Test:

  • Students who score 625 or higher on the TOEFL (250 on the computerized version).
  • Students who hold a degree from a U.S. institution (excluding institutions in U.S. trust territories).
  • Students who are residents of a country where English is the language of instruction. The Graduate School defines this criterion to apply to residents of Australia, Bahamas, Canada (except Quebec), England, Ghana, Ireland, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland and Wales.

All other international students must take the English Proficiency Test.

Citizens of other countries who are permanent residents of the United States are not required to take the TOEFL test or the University's Proficiency Test by the University. However, the program directors may require the English Proficiency Test and English 101X if there are questions about a student's English proficiency.

Registration For Three Hours Of Master's Paper/Thesis/Dissertation

Students are required (see University Graduate Handbook) to be registered whenever University resources (including faculty time) are being consumed to appropriately reflect work being done. In addition, the following specific registration requirements apply.

Master's students must be registered for three hours of master's paper or thesis during the semester that they defend their research activity. Ph.D. students may register for dissertation credits after they have completed coursework. Graduate students may register for three or more credits; however, additional credits will not be added to the minimum needed for graduation beyond the three to six hours (master's paper, three credits; thesis, three to six credits) appropriate for a MSN student or six hours required for a Ph.D. student.

Taking Undergraduate Courses (Graduate Students)

Graduate students who are required to take an undergraduate course for their graduate degree must make a grade of B- in order to maintain eligibility as a graduate student.

Teaching and Research Assistant Recipients

Each student holding a service or non-service appointment must be registered to hold that position during the fall and spring semesters.

Withdrawal from the University

(See University Graduate Handbook section on Withdrawal)

Students wishing to withdraw from the University must meet with their advisor and the appropriate program director. Upon notification from the Office of Academic Affairs, the registrar in the Office of Admissions and Student Services will give a withdrawal form to the student for processing with appropriate University offices. Questions about the process for changing student status should be directed to the appropriate program director or the School of Nursing Registrar in Carrington Hall, Suite 1200.
