Academic Performance and Progression
Requirements for Graduation
The student must meet academic requirements for graduation as found in the Undergraduate Bulletin of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dean's List
To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must meet one of the following requirements :
1. a 3.200 grade-point average with no grade lower than C if enrolled in fifteen or more hours of letter-grade credit, exclusive of physical education activities courses;
2. a 3.500 grade-point average with no grade lower than C if enrolled in at least twelve but fewer than fifteen hours of letter-grade credit, exclusive of physical education activities courses.
The grade-point average is based on the grades received and recorded at the time the Dean's List is published by the Office of the University Registrar. No changes are permitted to the Dean's List after that date.
Academic Performance and Progression
To remain a student in good academic standing, a C- or above must be earned
in all required nursing courses. A student who earns less than a C- in any required
nursing course will be placed on academic probation
for a minimum of one semester, and academic progression review will be initiated
by the Academic Standards Committee. The Committee will also review any student
who withdraws from a required nursing course at any time during the semester,
or is assigned a temporary grade such as IN or AB.
Probationary status requires a student meet regularly with the School’s
Academic Counselor to engage in a remediation plan. Removal from probation will
be approved by the Academic Standards Committee upon successful completion of
the plan and recommendation of the Academic Counselor.
Academic progression review
may result in dismissal from the Undergraduate Program in nursing. Conditions
for continuance in the program may include, but are not limited to, repetition
of previous coursework in which the grade earned was below C-, extended study
and tutorial assistance.
Undergraduate Progression Review
The Progression Review Board is composed of three members of the Academic Standards Committee. The chair of Academic Standards Committee chairs the Progression Review Board. A substitute review board chair will be appointed by the chair of the Baccalaureate
Faculty Executive Committee where the chair of Academic Standards has a conflict of interest. The Chair of Academic Standards may appoint other faculty to serve as necessary. The Director of Undergraduate Programs and the Director of the Office of Admissions
and Student Services serve as ex officio members of the Progression Review Board.
The Director of the Office of Admissions and Student Services will notify
the chair of Academic Standards Committee and the Director of Undergraduate Programs
of names of students with less than a C- or assigned a temporary grade such as
an IN or AB
in any required nursing course within 24 hours of receipt
of the official grade sheets submitted by faculty. Progression Review occurs
within two weeks of the report of less than a C-. If a grade is changed as a
result of an appeal, the Progression Review Committee will reconvene to reconsider
recommendations.
The Director of the Office of Admissions and Student Services will present the academic and clinical records of all affected students to the Progression Review Board meeting. The Director of Undergraduate Programs will present relevant data from course faculty
and the Academic Counselor. The Progression Review Board may request additional information regarding a student from any faculty member. The student being reviewed will not be present during the Progression Review Board's meeting.
A simple majority of the voting members of the Progression Review Board is required for any decision or recommendation of the Board regarding a student's progression in the nursing program. Following the meeting of the Progression Review Board, the chair
of the Progression Review Board will notify the chair of Academic Standards Committee of the Board's decisions and recommendations within 48 hours. The chair of Academic Standards Committee will send a letter of notification to the student with copies sent
to the Office of Admissions and Student Services for placement in the student's academic file and to the Director of Undergraduate Programs. In cases in which dismissal from the program is the Progression Review Board's recommendation, the letter also will
contain the Academic Standards Committee's specific requirements for readmission, if applicable. (Adopted by the faculty April 7, 1997.) The student may appeal the Progression Review Board's decision to the Dean.
The Dean, acting on behalf of the School of Nursing, reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any student who fails to meet the qualifications considered essential for professional nursing, irrespective of grades.
