How to Be a Successful Online Student

A successful online student will have:

  • Self-discipline and good time-management skills. Online courses provide flexibility on when you do classwork, but that freedom must be managed wisely. Keep up with your readings and assignments, and do not delay tasks until the last minute.
  • Time, time, time. Online does not mean easier! Be prepared to spend about 9 to 12 hours per week for a 3-credit course.
  • Ability to read, reflect, and write. Online learning relies heavily on reading assignments to convey course content. Unlike a classroom setting, online settings allow you to reflect on your answer before communicating it to the class or faculty member. Be sure to use this added time to organize your thoughts and incorporate your personal experiences. Most of your responses will be written, so sharpen your written communication skills!
  • Proactive management of your learning. If you run into problems accessing course materials, let the course support staff know! If you have trouble understanding a course concept, let your faculty member know! Problems tend to increase rapidly, so handle them early.
  • Comfort with technology. Technology is just a tool that allows you to take courses from home. Be sure that you are comfortable with this tool.
