Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor Kristen M. Swanson, RN, PhD, FAAN received a Distinguished Achievement Award from The University of Rhode Island (URI) in a ceremony held in Newport, Rhode Island on October 27.

Dean Swanson was one of twenty URI alumni who were lauded for their professional achievements, outstanding leadership or community service. She was recognized both for her research on pregnancy loss and for creating the “Swanson Theory of Caring”—a theory that has been incorporated into health organizations around the world to empower nurses to deliver higher quality, patient-centered care.

Because of the impact of her research on practice and the culture of care delivery, Dean Swanson was also recently designated the first Virginia Mason Medical Center Distinguished Nurse Scholar.

Dean Swanson earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from URI in 1975.
