252 [052] Individual and Family Development across the Life Span (3.0). Prerequisite, admission to program. Using a life span approach, the course focuses on individual psychosocial and cognitive development, developmental milestones, physical growth, and risk prevalence from infancy through elder years, and on family development.
255 [055] A Life Span Approach to Development of the Individual and Family (1.0-3.0). Prerequisite, admission to program or permission of the instructor; corequisite, NURS 363. Individuals and families are studied from a life-span developmental approach. The role of the nurse in relation to developmental needs and family focused-care is explored.
261 [061] Nursing Role in Normal Nutrition (2.0). Prerequisite, admission to program or permission of the instructor. This course involves the nursing application of nutritional concepts to the care of individuals, families, groups and populations across the life span.
262 [062] The Discipline of Nursing Part I (1.0). Prerequisites, admission to the program and a required nursing course with a clinical component. This three-part sequenced course will guide students in developing contextual knowledge and values of the discipline, emphasizing nursing history and theory, role specialization, and professional development.

The focus of the course is on development and application of basic nursing concepts and skills in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.

The course is concerned with the disruption of normal physiology; the alterations and mechanisms involved in the disruption; the manifestations in disease and at risk conditions; and the pathophysiological principles underlying therapeutic interventions.
358 [058] Pharmacology (2.0). Prerequisite, admission to program. Using the science of pharmacology and pharmacologic principles underlying therapeutic interventions, the course focuses on the introduction to nursing responsibilities regarding pharmacologic therapy.

363 [063] (6.0) Concepts, Processes, and Skills for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice. Prerequisite, admission to the program. The course focuses on applying basic nursing concepts. Communication, teaching principles, nutrition and psychomotor skills are emphasized in conjunction with nursing process. Research as a basis for practice is recognized.
365 [065] Nursing Care of Adults and Elders with Major Health Problems (6.0). Prerequisites, NURS 255, NURS 261, NURS 262: Introduction, 363, 364; corequisites, NURS 362: Roles, NURS 367, NURS 468, NURS 370, NURS 372. A health patterns' framework is used to examine the theoretical, research, and clinical bases of nursing practice with adults and elders experiencing major biophysiological alterations.
366 [066] Health Assessment (3.0). Prerequisites, Pre/corequisites, admission to program. Concepts and methods of comprehensive health assessment of children, adults, and elders. Emphasis will be on data collection as a basis for initiation of caring and decision making in nursing practice.

Prerequisites, admission to program, NURS 262, and one required course with a clinical component; corequisite, one required nursing course with a clinical component. This research course focuses on the values and inquiry skills to systematically locate, critically evaluate and use research related to the nursing care of individuals, families and groups in a global society.

This course, taught in two parts, uses pharmacology and pharmacologic principles to examine pharmacologic therapy and nursing responsibilities with clients across the life span.

388 [088] Introduction to Nursing Research (3.0). Prerequisites, NURS 251, NURS 356. This introductory course helps students conceptualize both the basic research process and the importance of research to nursing, and enables students to understand and use published health care research.
451 (51, part 3) Discipline of Nursing III (1.0). Prerequisites, Nurse 251, 351 and 356. This course emphasizes professional development. Students are introduced to a variety of roles for nurses and the underlying values shaping career trajectories related to practice and practice settings.

The course relies upon critical thinking for applying psychiatric and nursing theories to the nursing process in the care of mentally ill clients and families in various health care settings.

Selected concepts and theories are explored as a basis for making judgments and decisions in nursing practice. This course emphasizes analysis of clinical problems that affect the nursing care of selected populations. Students apply the nursing process, therapeutic communication skills, and teaching-learning principles in clinical situations.

Prepares RN students for population-focused practice in community health nursing. Analyses and applications of selected theories, and health promotion/protection and disease prevention strategies are emphasized.
