What is the Annual Fund?
Each academic year, alumni of the University are contacted to make a gift. They might be called by phone or sent a letter with reply envelope or pledge form. This contact is made by current students or by the alumni affairs officer in the school where the degree was awarded. Typically, amounts of gifts vary and usually increase over the years as an individual’s earning capacity and involvement increases. An annual gift is usually made out of discretionary income.
What is the Carolina First Campaign?
The Carolina First Campaign is a multi-year commitment to raise in excess of $1.5 billion to sustain the future of the University as a leading academic institution. This is an opportunity for alumni and friends to become involved long-term by engaging in the teaching, research and community service mission of UNC Chapel Hill and then pledging to help reach advancement goals over time. During the course of the campaign, many will make a major gift to the University that comes from their personal or corporate asset base. The commitment is significant and usually pledged over a 5-year period or more. This type of support is usually designated to fund scholarships, faculty positions, special programs, and new buildings.
What’s the difference between making a gift to Carolina First and making a gift to the Annual Fund?
Many alumni and friends will continue making their annual gift to Carolina while as they are also making a pledge to the School of Nursing Carolina First Campaign. They know that Annual Fund support provides discretionary (undesignated) dollars when restricted state funds are not enough to cover faculty stipends, student awards or innovative pilot programs. In these years of budgetary crisis, our Dean depends on the Annual Fund to give her the flexibility she needs to enable the School to continue its important work.
Your support to the campaign, for example, gives Dean Swanson the leverage to make the commitment to build the much needed addition to the School of Nursing. She had to demonstrate that there were funds she could allocate from the School of Nursing Foundation, Inc. to begin the construction.
Those who make an Annual Fund gift of $1,000 or more to the School of Nursing are welcomed to the Dean’s Circle.
What is the Chancellor’s Club?
The University gives special recognition to those who make an Annual Fund gift of $2,000 or more. They are welcomed to the Chancellor’s Club.
What does “unrestricted” giving mean?
This means that the University and/or the Dean of the School to which you contribute can determine where your gift is needed most and allocate those funds to that purpose.
Can I support a specific program through an annual fund gift?
Annual fund gifts are usually unrestricted so that the Dean can allocate dollars where they are urgently needed.
What is the Honor Roll of Giving?
Once a year, everyone who has made a gift to the School of Nursing from July 1 to June 30 of that year, is recognized on the Honor Roll of Giving in an issue of Carolina Nursing. This includes those who have made an annual gift and those who have made a major gift.
