We invite all nursing faculty at each of the three partner institutions to make use of Center resources as they develop research proposals or conduct research programs related to health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities. The Center provides the following resources: Funding for Pilot Studies If you have any questions or would like to use any of the Center's resources, please contact Wanda Weaver at wanda@email.unc.edu or (919) 966-0453. Each year, the Center funds small-scale and pilot projects preliminary to larger investigations related to health disparities. Each study receives a one-year award of up to $10,000. The Center will also fund a percentage of faculty time to work on the research proposal. Eligibility: Link to the PDF file Questions: Consultation on Research Methodology Chris McQuiston - Dr. McQuiston is available to consult with faculty on cross-cultural and community-based research. She has conducted community-based research with the Latino community in Durham, NC, for 6 years. This effort began with an ethnographic study that informed the development of culture-specific HIV prevention interventions (McQuiston, Choi-Hevel, Clawson, 2000; McQuiston & Uribe, 2001) and a research derived lay model of Latino HIV prevention (McQuiston & Flaskerud 2001). Dr. McQuiston can also consult on methodologic concerns related to the use of Likert type scale response formats with unacculturated Mexicans (McQuiston, Larson, Parrado & Flaskerud, 2002), as well as recruitment strategies with recent immigrants (McQuiston et al., 2001). Margarete Sandelowski - Dr. Sandelowski is available to consult with faculty on qualitative research methodology. Her expertise in qualitative methods is broad and includes the development/refinement of analytic techniques for qualitative metasynthesis to facilitate the integration and dissemination of research. She is on the Editorial Board of Qualitative Health Research, Advances in Nursing Science, and Research in Nursing and Health, and is Assistant Editor of and monthly contributor to Research in Nursing and Health. The Center is prepared to provide a range of supports for faculty developing grants for external funding. Prior to writing a grant for external funding, you will need to do pilot study work to establish preliminary support for your research idea and your credibility as a researcher. We will match you with a mentor who will help you conceptualize your research and develop a timeline for developing it to the stage that you are ready to write a grant for external funding. When you are ready to write a grant, we will match you with experienced faculty who will read multiple versions of your grant so that you can submit a competitive proposal. We will schedule a "mock review" during the final two months of your grant preparation. The "mock review" simulates the NIH review process and involves having multiple faculty with expertise review your grant and then meet with you for two hours as a group to offer their observations and recommendations. The Center offers Monthly Seminars and day-long workshops on methodological and theoretical issues in the conduct of research and on the implementation of research findings. For a schedule of educational programs, refer to our list of upcoming events. The Center will provide shared space, equipment, and a variety of services to support the conduct and dissemination of research and the mentorship of students and faculty. The Center at all three universities includes shared space for use by pilot study investigators, students, and supporting study staff. The shared space is equipped with personal computers and printers. The Center office at UNC-Chapel Hill maintains a library of articles and books on various topics related to the health of and research with racial/ethnic minorities and employs a student assistant who is be available to help retrieve literature from the library. |
