A scholarship will soon be available to students who demonstrate an interest in family care and aspire to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. SON supporter and Chapel Hill resident Eunice Brock has established her second endowed scholarship benefiting nursing students. This new fund comes in response to the growing needs for nurse practitioners within our healthcare system.

Ms. Brock’s interest in assisting nursing students is the result of her late daughter’s dedication to the profession. Melinda Kellner Brock began her career in a mother/baby unit, and spent fifteen years in Family Planning at the Durham County Health Department. She was a tireless advocate for her patients, and often led in finding them social as well as medical resources. To honor this service, Eunice created the Melinda Kellner Brock Public Health Nursing Scholarship in 2011.

To continue Melinda’s legacy as a family centered nurse, this second scholarship will focus on students who wish to pursue family oriented practice at the nurse practitioner level. Ms. Brock sees a growing demand for nurse practitioners to fill primary care roles in the changing healthcare landscape. Her investment in future nurse practitioner students is a wonderful tribute to Melinda’s life and work.
