The Global Nursing Advisory Committee promotes strategic global health initiatives for School of Nursing faculty and students in teaching, research and service consistent with goals for scholarship (discovery, engagement, integration, and teaching). Informal quarterly meetings are open to international students and scholars or any person seeking to become more culturally aware from a global perspective. Round-table discussions are held and everyone is encouraged to participate.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs fosters cultural sensitivity in teaching, learning, practice, and research. A commitment to design, implement, and evaluate recruitment and retention programs for faculty, staff, and students from groups underrepresented in nursing and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds is embedded in the School's mission and culture.
The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISSS) offers these programs:
Conversation Partners Program
UNC-Chapel Hill foreign students and their spouses can improve their pronunciation skills and understanding of the English language while finding out about their new environment. International students can apply to meet with a conversational partner for private one-on-one hourly sessions each week.International Friendship Program
This program is designed to match an international student with a local family or given the opportunity to establish a relationship that may include an occasional meal, celebration of holidays, participation in community events and other facets of international friendships.International Women's English Conversation Group
This group provides an opportunity for international women, including the spouses of international students and scholars, to meet other women from around the world as well as American members of the Chapel Hill community. The women learn about local activities for themselves and their children, and have English conversation lessons in a relaxed atmosphere.

International Teaching Assistants Program
The UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School has implemented strategies to meet the needs of international students, as well as all their students. The School of Nursing has reviewed these strategies in the process of developing our program:
The UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School offers assistance to its international students through a Leadership Coaching Program.
- A coach meets with these students once a week for 45 minutes to an hour
- International students are provided advising/resources as needed
- The School of Business facilitates a welcoming atmosphere; i. e put ping pong table in student lounge and provides a "plan" for speech and acculturation including:
- Help to find American roommates
- Help in finding recreational activities on campus
- Providing international students with “assignments” such as planning a class party
- Offering speech coaching
- Assists student with building confidence
- Assistance to spouses thier families
- Help for editing resumes and cover letters
The in-house Kenan-Flagler Business Communications Center offers assistance in writing through a service staffed by second year MBA students who were undergraduate English majors.
- Consultants work one-on-one with students to:
- revise written assignments
- revise cover letters or resume, and
- improve presentation and interview skills
Durham Tech offers free beginning level day and night ESL classes on Franklin Street at various churches..
- Student must sign up a few months in advance
- The classes are s emester based (fall/spring/summer)
- Students are tested, and then placed at appropriate level (reading, writing and oral evaluation)
Chapel Hill Institute for Cultural and Language Education (CHI-CLE)
CHICLE is a full-service, locally-owned language institute in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Our students may benefit from visiting this institute which is located near The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus. They are able to teach a wide variety of languages, as well as some advanced classes that combine language and literature. They also have an excellent program for both children and adults.
