Blue Cross and Blue Shield Duke/Carolina Visiting Geriatric Professorship
This six year grant was designed to further attention on the importance of geriatric nursing research and practice in ways that will benefit patients, providers, and health care leaders. With support from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina the faculties of both Schools of Nursing come together in a joint session with the Visiting Professor to discuss issues related to geriatric nursing research, practice and service. In addition the Visiting Professor provides consultations to our health systems’ partners, and offers a public lectureship in honor of Dr. Carol Hogue, a distinguished geriatric nursing leader who is affiliated with both Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Schools of Nursing.
2010 BlueCross BlueShield Duke-Carolina Visiting Geriatrics Professor:
Mary D. Naylor, Ph.D., RN, FAAN is the Marian S. Ware Professor in Gerontology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Since the late 1980s, Dr. Naylor has led an interdisciplinary team of scholars in a program of research designed to enhance the quality of life of vulnerable older adults and their caregivers. Findings from NIH-funded randomized clinical trials testing a model of discharge planning and home follow-up by advanced practice nurses have consistently demonstrated improved health outcomes and decreased costs for high risk cognitively intact elders compared to standard care. Supported by the Commonwealth Fund and the Langeloth Foundation and in partnership with a major insurer, efforts are underway to promote widespread adoption of this evidence-based model of care coordination. As part of Penn’s Marian S. Ware Alzheimer Program, Dr. Naylor is leading a team of clinical scholars in the implementation and evaluation of a similar care model aimed at enhancing the quality of care of cognitively impaired elders and their caregivers.
As part of the BlueCross BlueShield Duke Carolina Visiting Geriatrics Professor initiative, Dr. Naylor will be speaking at the joint Duke-Carolina day on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Dr. Naylor will address the subject “Older Adults in Care Transitions: Research and Realities.” Dr. Naylor will be visiting the UNC campus on Thursday, May 6 to meet with hospital staff and UNC SON faculty.
