Barbara Carlson photoAs a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Adult-Geriatric Heath at the School of Nursing, Dr. Carlson is conducting highly significant studies on breathing patterns during sleep, cerebral oxygenation, and cognitive decline among community dwelling older adults.Findings from her research have been published in a number of leading peer reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, Journals of Gerontology: Medical Science, Research in Gerontological Nursing, Biological Research for Nursing, and the Journal of Gerontological Nursing. In addition, Dr. Carlson has received numerous awards for her research including the 1999 Clinical Medicine Research Award from the Gerontological Society of America, the Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development Award from the Institute on Aging, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Laurel Archer Copp Literary Achievement Award from the School of Nursing and most recently, the Excellence in Geriatric Nursing Research Mid-Career Award (2010) and the D. Jean Wood Award for Excellence in Nursing Research (2011) from the Southern Nursing Research Society.
