Guatemala:
The SON is offering students the opportunity to study abroad in Guatemala. While visiting the Central-American country, students live and share meals with a Guatemalan family, study Spanish and learn about culture, health and social issues. The experience is aimed at teaching nursing students how to provide culturally sensitive health care for Spanish-speaking patients. This is particularly relevant for nurses in North Carolina, a state experiencing one of the fastest growing Latino populations.

"This experience heightened my awareness of differences in healthcare systems. Given the increasing trend toward immigration from Latin American countries, it is vitally important for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn about the customs, culture, and language of these people." said Holly O’Hearn, BSN ’05.
