A proposal submitted by multiple principal investigators, Dr. Gary Cuddeback, PhD, from the School of Social Work, Dr. Diane Berry, PhD, ANP-BC, FAANP, from the SON, and Dr. Robin Reed, MD, MPH, from the School of Medicine has been funded by the UNC Center for Diabetes Translational Research. The pilot study “Management of Type 2 Diabetes in Patients with Severe Mental Illness” will test the feasibility of implementing the intervention in two local mental health clinics. Dr. Berry and her colleagues are also planning to determine the extent to which diabetes self-management education improves health outcomes for individuals living with type 2 diabetes and severe mental illness.
