Objectives

After completion of this unit the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the purpose of the research design.
  2. Identify the following designs used in nursing research: Descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental study designs.
  3. Explore the following designs used in nursing research: Descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental study designs.
  4. Discuss the following concepts relevant to design: Causality, multicausality, and probability.
  5. Describe the role of validity in conducting research.
  6. Compare and contrast the four types of validity (statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity).
  7. Describe the threats to the four types of design validity.
  8. Describe the elements of a good design (controlling the environment, controlling equivalence of subjects and groups, controlling the treatment, controlling measurement, and controlling extraneous variables).
  9. Model designs of published studies.
