After completion of this unit the participant will be able to:
- Identify the purpose of the research design.
- Identify the following designs used in nursing research:
Descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental study
designs.
- Explore the following designs used in nursing research:
Descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental study
designs.
- Discuss the following concepts relevant to design: Causality, multicausality, and probability.
- Describe the role of validity in conducting research.
- Compare and contrast the four types of validity (statistical
conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and
external validity).
- Describe the threats to the four types of design validity.
- Describe the elements of a good design (controlling the
environment, controlling equivalence of subjects and groups,
controlling the treatment, controlling measurement, and controlling
extraneous variables).
- Model designs of published studies.
