The UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing is pleased to announce that it is now offering pathways to advanced practice nursing via its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. The new application deadline for MSN or DNP fall 2014 matriculation is Feb. 11, 2014.

The School decided to offer both MSN and DNP advanced practice pathways following careful consideration by faculty and administration and after listening to feedback from nurses interested in furthering their education.

“By providing multiple educational routes to advanced practice nursing, we are offering nurses more options for career development while helping to meet the nursing workforce needs of North Carolina,” said Kristen M. Swanson, RN, PhD, FAAN, Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor.

Nurses holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), as well as RNs with an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing, can apply to both nurse practitioner and health care systems MSN options. Nurse practitioner options include Adult Gerontology – Primary Care, Adult Gerontology – Primary Care Oncology, Family, Pediatric-Primary Care, and Psychiatric-Mental Health. The Health Care Systems options are Administration, Clinical Nurse Leader, Nurse Educator, Informatics, and Outcomes Management.

MSN- or BSN-prepared nurses can apply to School’s DNP program, which admitted its first students in fall of 2013. The program prepares nurses for direct clinical practice and for executive roles in areas that support clinical practice.
