Dr. Durham has been involved in nursing education for over 29 years. Through more than a decade of simulation experience she has developed immersive clinical experiences for a variety of learners including undergraduate nursing students, nurse practitioner students, practicing RNs, LPNs, and nursing assistants. Additionally, she collaborates with schools of pharmacy and medicine to develop interprofessional simulations. She was one of the simulation experts for the National League of Nursing and Laerdal Medical project which created the Simulation Innovation Resource Center. Dr. Durham has been involved in Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) as a core faculty since its beginning. She received the Nurse Educator of the Year from the North Carolina Nurses Association in 2005. In 2008 she received the alumni of the year award from both her alum schools of nursing: Western Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2009 she received the Bayada Award for Technological Innovation in Nursing Education. In 2009 she was inducted as a Fellow into the National League of Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education and in 2010 she received the Academic Achievement Award from Western Carolina University. In 2012, she became the President-Elect for the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
