Sandra Funk, PhD, is a Professor in the Family Health Division of the School of Nursing. She holds master's and doctoral degrees in quantitative and social psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Funk teaches research grant writing to doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows and co-teaches with Elizabeth Tornquist a summer research institute on research grant writing offered by the School's Center for Lifelong Learning. Through the Research Support Center, she mentors faculty on design, measurement, proposal development, and research management. Her research interests, grants and publications focus on various aspects of applied measurement and research utilization and facilitation. She is lead author of the BARRIERS to research utilization scale, which has been used throughout the world to measure perceived barriers to the use of research in practice. With Elizabeth Tornquist, she is editor of the "Key Aspects" series of research-for-practice books published by Springer Publishing. The Barriers scale can be accessed here.
