Facilities manager Sam Deal was selected to be profiled on Meet a Tar Heel, a feature on the UNC-Chapel Hill website. Meet a Tar Heel showcases students, faculty, staff, and alumni who make UNC-CH the best place to teach, learn, and discover.

Mr. Deal has worked tirelessly for the SON for nearly a decade. As Facilities Manager, he is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of Carrington Hall, including maintaining the building, managing security, and coordinating renovations, among many other responsibilities.

He was recently the first staff member to be awarded both the Outstanding Staff of the Year Award and the H.O.P.E. Award in the same year. The Outstanding Staff of the Year Award was created to recognize an individual staff member who has demonstrated exemplary performance and has contributed to the general success of the SON. The H.O.P.E., Helping Other People Excel Award, recognizes a staff or faculty member who has helped to create a “welcoming, inclusive, and hospitable environment in which all members of the SON community can flourish and realize their dreams.”

Mr. Deal is well-known at the SON for his positive attitude and the joy he finds in helping his colleagues.

“Sam is a joy to be around,” says Associate Dean for Administrative Services Lisa Miller. “He goes out of his way to help people. He is very helpful and very caring.”

According to Mr. Deal, the SON is the best place he has ever worked for, and part of that has to do with the wonderful people he’s surrounded by.

“I truly love what I do and who I do it for,” Mr. Deal says. “I love the nursing profession. In my opinion, it is the profession of caring.”
