The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing tied for fourth in the 2011U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate School rankings. This is a move up from its tie for fifth place in 2007, the last time the publication ranked graduate-level nursing programs.
The School’s average assessment score of 4.5 matched that of the University of California-San Francisco and placed it just under Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Washington, which all tied for first with a score of 4.6. The U.S. News and World Report rankings are based on the ratings of peer academic experts and will appear in the 2012 edition of “Best Graduate Schools.”
SON also ranked in the top ten for several nursing specialties. It tied for fourth in the psychiatric/mental health clinical nurse specialist category, placed tenth for pediatric nurse practitioner, and was sixth for nursing service administration. See all the nursing rankings here.
“Our graduate clinical programs supply North Carolina with advanced practice nurses that help meet the primary, psychiatric, chronic, and specialty care needs of the citizens of our State; nurse administrators that provide leadership for the safe delivery of patient care; and educators that prepare future generations of nurses for entry into practice as RNs and advanced practice nurses,” said Dr. Kristen M. Swanson, SON Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor. “These outstanding rankings show the strength of our graduate programs and their level of respect among our peers.”
The School continues to look at ways to make its graduate programs accessible to more nurses across NC and is expanding its distance enhanced offerings. It now offers a 32 credit clinical nurse leader (CNL) option in the master’s program that prepares nurses to provide and manage care across all health care settings. CNL students may also take an additional 6 course credits to be prepared as a nurse educator.
