The Office of Advancement enhances the interests of the School, its students, faculty and programs by involving its alumni, friends and patrons in its life and activities through regular communication, special events and philanthropic opportunities.

Director of Advancement and Executive Director, School of Nursing Foundation, Inc.
Norma Hawthorne

Norma Hawthorne came to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August 2001 to lead the School of Nursing’s Office of Advancement.  She is responsible for the School’s $15 million capital campaign and major gift fundraising, working with faculty to develop corporate and foundation proposals, and managing the day-to-day operations of the department.  Norma has over 20 years experience in higher education marketing, communications and business development. 

Hawthorne graduated from California State University at Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and received the M.S. from University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business in 1988.  In February 1999, she joined the American Social Health Association as senior director of marketing and communications, where she led a $1.3 million marketing, publishing and corporate development group. From 1991 to 1999, she served as director of corporate and community relations and director of marketing for The George Washington University, Washington, DC. Hawthorne was recruited in 1989 to join the University of Virginia’s Division of Continuing Education as statewide director of marketing, coming from Indiana University at South Bend where she served as manager of marketing and noncredit courses for seven years.

She was a director of the 1400-member University Continuing Education Association, won numerous national marketing and communications awards, and was recently named to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Advancement Professionals leadership team.

Associate Director of Alumni Affairs & Annual Giving
Anne Webb

Anne Webb joined the School of Nursing Advancement Office in October 2001 as associate director for alumni affairs and annual giving. She also holds the position of Executive Director of the School of Nursing Alumni Association Board of Directors. She has been with the university since 1998, first serving as Program Manager for the Employee Services Department. There she managed programs and special events for employees. Anne obtained a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994 and earned the Master’s in Public Administration from UNC-Greensboro in 2004 where she focused research on Women and Philanthropy.  She is a 2001 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Employee Excellence.

Associate Director of Public Relations and Communications
Whitney Howell

Whitney L.J. Howell joined the School of Nursing in 2007 as the associate director of public relations and communications. She is responsible for increasing the visibility of the School, its people and programs by managing public relations, advancement publications and advertising. Whitney is the editor-in-chief of Carolina Nursing magazine and the Research Chronicle. She works with faculty to showcase their academic and scientific achievements in local, state and national media and publications. Prior to working at UNC, Whitney was a public relations specialist at the Duke University Medical Center News Office where she covered and promoted 11 departments. Before joining Duke, she was a staff writer for the Association of American Medical Colleges newsletter, The Reporter, and a reporter and editor for United Communications Group. She began her career as a government reporter at The Montgomery Journal in Maryland. Whitney received her bachelor’s degree in business administration and German in 2000 from Furman University in South Carolina and her master’s in international print journalism and public affairs in 2001 from The American University in Washington, D.C.
