In 1992, Carolina established the state’s first minority affairs office in a school of nursing. Since then, our emphasis has been on developing a positive, welcoming culture that focuses on the unique needs of each student, faculty and staff member, ensuring fair and equitable conditions for everyone regardless of ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, education or religion.

A Message from the Office of Inclusive Excellence –

Dear SON Community,
The UNC School of Nursing Office of Inclusive Excellence joins the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion in condemning the continued acts of violence against Black people, especially Black men.
During these last months we have often found ourselves emotionally weary, and this week that is compounded by grief, horror and devastation over the incidents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where George Floyd was killed by police officers with their knees on his neck while he pled that he could not breathe. This comes just just three months after Ahmaud Arbery was killed while jogging in his neighborhood, and we once again find ourselves trying to understand the senseless killing of an African American man.
When acts of hatred, bigotry and in this case police brutality grip our country, it is crucial that we reflect on what it must feel like to experience such tragedies — the impact on a nation, a community, a family, an individual. The looting and burning in Minneapolis will not right the wrong that occurred, but for some it may feel like the only way to be heard and recognized.
Today we encourage you to pause for a moment of silence to consider and commit to continuing our diversity and inclusive excellence work. Take the time to allow your hearts and minds to empathize with the Black community of Minneapolis, with the community of Brunswick, Georgia, and with our own colleagues and friends who are hurt, upset and angry.
As we continue to strive for excellence in nursing, please remember that creating an environment of inclusivity and diversity is absolutely critical to achieving that excellence. Let our School, community and profession be beacons of inclusivity for all people regardless of their uniqueness on any dimension.
