3rd Annual Astrike Symposium
Save the Date for the 3rd Annual Charles and Colleen Astrike Symposium in Health Care Solutions!
The symposium was established by the family of Charlie and Colleen Astrike to honor the lives and memory of their parents and to inspire high-level discussion about patient safety among nurses. Their motivation is highly personal: following Colleen’s hospitalization in 2012, the family struggled to get the nurses or doctors in charge of her care to see that her pain was worsening and her condition deteriorating.
“It got to the point where we became the aggravating family,” said Nancy Astrike, daughter of the Astrikes. “The end result is that she probably spent the last 10 hours of her life in unnecessary pain, and probably the last 12 hours of her life unnecessarily scared.”
The family is now committed to promoting the nurses’ role in providing safe care to patients. “We believe that nurses, other health care professionals, and administrators must work to develop policies, procedures, protocols, education programs and assessments that support evidence-based and compassionate care that emphasizes communication with patients,” said Nancy.
