Carrington Renewal Project Updates for students, faculty and staff
Exciting developments are underway at Carolina Nursing as we embark on a project to replace the aging west wing of Carrington Hall, constructed in 1969, with a state-of-the-art Nursing Education Building. With demolition scheduled to begin this fall, we are thrilled to announce the beginning of a new chapter in our School’s history.
To ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible, we have already begun relocating some School of Nursing departments to temporary swing spaces on campus.
Most classes will remain in Carrington Hall until October 1, 2023, at which point Carrington will be completely vacated and all faculty, staff and students will be fully settled in their new locations.
Read on below to learn more about how this transition will impact Carolina Nursing students, staff and faculty.
Student FAQs
What will happen to Carrington Hall? –
The original Carrington Hall, constructed in 1969, will be demolished. The Carrington Hall addition, built in 2005, will remain intact and be fully integrated into the new Nursing Education Building.
Both wings will be vacated for the construction project, but we hope to be able to reoccupy the Carrington Hall addition before the new facility is complete.
When will Carrington Hall be vacated? –
Where will my classes and labs be held? –
Simulation labs and student support offices will be relocated to ITS Manning while the new Nursing Education Building is under construction. Additional office space has been secured at the UNC Administrative Office Building for non-student-facing departments.
We’ve requested classroom spaces in local health sciences buildings, including Bondurant Hall and the Medical Biomolecular Research Building (MBRB). Your associate deans and/or instructors will be in touch as soon as the classroom assignments for the fall semester have been finalized.
Where will students be able to gather and socialize? –
Student spaces will be set up in ITS Manning on floors 1 and 2 and in the common area near classrooms in MBRB (depending upon availability).
How will I find student support offices like OSA and compliance? –
All student support offices, as well as simulation labs, will be located in suite 2600 of ITS Manning.
We will publish a directory on our website once the temporary office assignments have been finalized.
Will PhD students have access to workstations? –
Yes, PhD students will be able to reserve workstations at the Administrative Offices Building. Reservation instructions coming soon!
Will I need my One Card to access the simulation labs and student support offices in ITS Manning? –
Yes. One Card access will be required at all times at ITS Manning.
How long will the construction project take? –
About two and a half years. Demolition will begin in the fall of 2023, and we expect the new building to open its doors in the spring of 2026.
What is the size of the new building? –
The new Nursing Education Building will be 110,000 square feet — that’s 20,000 square feet larger than our existing space — and will provide a modern structure complete with the latest technologies to better prepare students. This world-class facility will enable an increase in class sizes, which means more Carolina Nurses entering the workforce each year to provide quality, compassionate care on the frontlines of our health care systems.
