Tyrell County, North Carolina, a rural, sparsely populated county about 185 miles east from Chapel Hill. The county seat is Columbia, North Carolina, and it isn’t far from the North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
What Students Do
Work with community partners to plan, implement and evaluate various health promotion activities at the senior center, elementary school, middle school, high school, emergency food pantry, and in homes and other agencies in the county. Projects focus on community needs identified by Tyrrell County partners and build on the great work over the past ten years!
This opportunity can be part of NURS320 or an independent one-credit interprofessional service-learning elective for nursing, physical therapy, public health, audiology, and other interested students in the health disciplines. The five-day immersive service-learning trip to Tyrrell County is the Sunday of spring break with return to Chapel Hill Thursday evening. There are 3 pre-departure and one post trip class meetings on campus.
