Min Gong, a student in the UNC School of Nursing’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, has been awarded the UnitedHealth Foundation Diversity in Health Care Scholarship. This scholarship supports tuition costs for future clinicians from historically underrepresented backgrounds, fostering a culturally relevant workforce and improving access to care in underserved areas.
The Diversity in Health Care Scholarship is part of the UnitedHealth Foundation’s 10-year, $100 million commitment to advancing a diverse healthcare workforce. The program aims to provide scholarships and support to 10,000 current and future clinicians by 2033. Since its inception in 2007, the scholarship has helped students from diverse backgrounds advance their clinical skills and provide culturally relevant care to patients.
The scholarship evaluation process considers work experience, community service, career goals, and overcoming challenges, ensuring recipients demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the health and welfare of their communities.
Min plans to specialize in emergency behavioral health care, focusing on providing mental health services to at-risk populations.
Professor Meg Carman, DNP, RN, ACNP-BC, ENP-BC, FAEN, stated, “Min’s passion for providing mental health services, especially to at-risk populations, helps the school to meet its mission, and to receive this scholarship is well-deserved recognition.”
