Sonda Oppewal | COVID-19 Case Investigation
Orange County Public Health Department
The CDC defines case investigation as part of the process of supporting patients with suspected or confirmed infection. Case investigation can include helping patients remember where they have been or who they have seen, providing essential information on potential new infections. This important clinical intervention has been vital to COVID-19 control efforts.
During the pandemic, UNC School of Nursing Professor Sonda Oppewal, PhD, RN, APHN-BC, has volunteered her time to help the Orange County Public Health Department with case investigation. Some Public Health Nursing in Community Settings (NURS 484) students have had the opportunity to work alongside Professor Oppewal, enhancing their education and helping the Orange County community in the process.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross set up a Disaster Action Team in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Oppewal, who is a member of the team, gives presentations on COVID-19 to American Red Cross staff and volunteers. She has been able to pass on her experience as an American Red Cross volunteer by discussing their work and other disaster-related activities with students in the NURS 484 class.
