In 2016, the School launched an initiative for veteran and active-duty military students aimed at creating a smooth transition into the School’s academic programs.
Rebecca Kitzmiller, PhD, MHR, RN, BC, Assistant Professor and former Army Nurse coordinates the military initiative. In 2014 the school brought together a group of faculty, staff and students with military backgrounds to form the School’s Military Advisory Committee to create and guide this initiative.
In accordance with state law, the University of North Carolina provides admissions deferments to members of the military and their spouses.
Reserved Armed Forces: two-year minimum deferment period
Active Duty Armed Forces: five-year minimum deferment period
Students must request a deferment at least 30 days prior to enrollment.
No applicant will be denied admission to the University solely based on military service or the intent to enter military service.
In addition to providing an in-state tuition rate to any student using Veterans Affairs Education Benefits and others who qualify under the Choice Act, per state law the University of North Carolina will provide an in-state tuition rate to student veterans who meet certain criteria.
To qualify for in-state tuition students must meet all three of the criteria below:
- Served active duty for at least 90 days
- Honorably discharged
- Meet one of the following:
- Served active duty with a permanent station in North Carolina for at least 90 consecutive days
- Graduated from a North Carolina high school on or after January 1, 2004
- Was awarded a Purple Heart
The student is responsible for providing documentation that the above criteria have been met.

UNC Army ROTC Nursing Scholarships
UNC Army ROTC offers scholarships for qualified nursing students who seek to become Army Nurses. Students who receive a Nursing Scholarship are guaranteed a job as an Army Nurse in an Army hospital upon graduation and commissioning. Legal Services
VALOR group: The Veterans Advocacy Legal Organization is a student organization located in the Law school. It consists of veterans, military family members, and other law students interested in supporting veterans in the community. VALOR offers pro bono legal services to veterans and educates the Carolina Law student body on Veterans Affairs legal issues. VALOR’s scholarship compilation.
Residency and in-state tuition
- Tuition: Active-duty military members stationed in North Carolina, their qualifying dependents, and members of the North Carolina National Guard may qualify for in-state tuition benefits.
- Those who are veterans and using Chapter 30 or 33 benefits, or their qualifying dependents using Chapter 33 benefits, who have left active duty within the last 3 calendar years may qualify for the Choice Act, which would also grant in-state tuition. Find more information here.
