Tamryn L. Fowler, PhD, MPH, MSN, RN
Assistant Professor, UNC School of Nursing; Associate Member, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Assistant Professor, UNC School of Nursing; Associate Member, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dr. Tamryn Lashea Fowler is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and an Associate Member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is an oncology and palliative care nurse scientist whose research focuses on improving the experiences and outcomes of adults and older adults and their family caregivers, with particular expertise in hematologic malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and cellular therapies such as CAR-T.
Dr. Fowler’s program of research focuses on family caregiving, psycho-oncology, health equity, palliative and supportive care, and care transitions. Her work seeks to understand how patients and families navigate complex cancer treatment and recovery and to develop scalable, family-centered behavioral and supportive care interventions that strengthen caregiver preparedness, coping, and quality of life while promoting patient recovery and well-being. Her research is particularly focused on periods of transition from hospital-based treatment to care at home, when substantial clinical and supportive care responsibilities shift to family caregivers.
Dr. Fowler earned her BSN and MSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MPH in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a PhD from the Johns Hopkins University, where she was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar. Her research and career development have been supported by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program, Oncology Nursing Foundation, Cambia Health Foundation, Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators, and the Oppenheimer Family Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care Research Grants Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Dr. Fowler brings clinical experience in pediatric oncology and blood and marrow transplantation to her research and has held academic and research appointments at Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Her long-term goal is to advance evidence-based, family-centered models of cancer and palliative care that improve quality of life for patients and the family caregivers who support them.
