Respiratory viruses, including the flu, COVID-19, and RSV, are prevalent in fall and winter. To safeguard yourself and others, follow preventive measures, stay informed about local virus activity, and adhere to public health guidance.
Key Points:
- Stay Home If Sick: If you exhibit symptoms that could pose a risk to others, stay home. This guidance applies to all illnesses that might endanger patients, preceptors, faculty, or fellow students, especially highly contagious ones like the flu or norovirus.
- Testing and Medical Advice: When sick, it’s recommended to get tested for Covid-19 and seek medical attention from Campus Health or other clinics, particularly if you’re unsure about attending classes or clinical rotations.
- Positive COVID-19 Test:
- For external clinical sites: Follow site-specific guidelines on when you can return and use of a mask. Communicate with your preceptor or clinical/course coordinator for site-specific protocols.
- For on-campus clinicals: Adhere to UNC Health’s policy, which requires a 5-day isolation period, symptom resolution, and fever absence before returning. You must wear a mask for an additional 5 days.
- If not in clinical rotation: Follow CDC isolation instructions or consult a provider for advice on returning to classes or other activities.
Important Notes:
- Communication: Campus Health and other medical providers will not notify your program or school directly. You must inform the designated contact at your school or program about any medical advice or conditions.
- CDC Guidance: While CDC recommendations are useful, they are general. Healthcare facilities must balance staff needs with the protection of vulnerable patients.
Stay updated with changes in public health guidance and clinical site policies, which may exceed these recommendations.
