The UNC School of Nursing is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Exemplary Leadership Scholarship Awards. This scholarship recognizes graduating students for their exceptional contributions to the School of Nursing through leadership, advocacy, and innovation. BSN recipients Caroline Roseman and Christine Salcedo, along with ABSN recipients Joaquín Carcaño and Linnea Week, have each been awarded a $750 scholarship.
Caroline Roseman
Caroline Roseman, from Wilmington, North Carolina, has held several key leadership positions, including President of the UNC Association of Nursing Students and the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students from May 2023 to May 2024. She represented the School of Nursing in SHAC (April 2023-2024), and is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society (April 2024), Leadership U Honor Society (January 2024), and Order of Omega Honor Society (November 2023). Caroline plans to work as a nurse in the Cardiac ICU at UNC Medical Center after graduation.
Christine Salcedo
Christine Salcedo, from Cary, North Carolina, has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout her time at the School of Nursing. She served as Co-President of the School of Nursing’s IPEP Committee, Vice President of the Aspiring Critical Care Nurses Interest Group, Fundraising Chair of USGC, and Community Outreach Chair of ANS. Additionally, she was a Nursing School Ambassador, a BSN Representative on the Dean’s Student Advisory Committee, and a Nursing Representative on the IPEP Student Executive Committee. Christine will join UNC Medical Center’s Cardiothoracic and Vascular ICU as a new graduate nurse this summer.
Joaquín Carcaño
Joaquín Carcaño, from Rio Grande Valley, Texas, has been an active leader in several organizations. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Hispanic Medical Association, and the UNC SHAC clinic. Joaquín has served on the Board of Directors for the LGBTQ Center of Durham, Equality NC, the Southern AIDS Coalition, and the ACLU of NC. Post-graduation, he aims to work in emergency care with plans to pursue forensic nursing and SANE nurse certification, focusing on health equity advocacy for LGBTQ and BIPOC communities.
Linnea Week
Linnea Week, from Minnetonka, Minnesota, has actively engaged in various leadership roles at UNC. Her contributions include serving as a birth doula for UNC Main, a research assistant under Dr. Saif Khairat in virtual nursing care, a School of Nursing Ambassador, and a mentor for pre-nursing and current ABSN students. She also participated in student government and United We Stand. Linnea aspires to work in a pediatric emergency department in Boston and serve in ski patrol.
