Army Surgeon General and SON Alumna Patricia D. Horoho to Be Honored On University Day

Army Surgeon General Patricia D. Horoho, BSN ’82, FAAN will be one of five alumni to receive a Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award at University Day on October 12, 2014.

Lt. Gen Horoho made history when she was sworn in as the 43rd Army Surgeon General in December 2011. She is the first nurse and the first woman to serve in this position since it was originally established in 1775. Among her many achievements, Lt. Gen Horoho has been honored by Time Life Publications for her brave actions to deliver medical care following the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon. Her awards and commendations include many of the top honors awarded by the United States Army, honorary degrees, and numerous professional distinctions, including her induction as a Fellow in the National Academy of Nursing in 2012.

Lt. Gen Horoho last visited the SON in 2011 when the SON Alumni Association presented her with their Alumna of the Year award. During her visit, she generously shared personal reflections on her military experience, her Carolina education, and how she developed her style of leadership.

All members of the SON community are invited to attend University Day. The ceremony will be held on Sunday October 12th at 2:00 PM in Memorial Hall. The featured speaker will be Governor Patrick McCrory. A reception will follow the ceremony outside of Memorial Hall. More information on the event can be found on the University Day website.
