The UNC School of Nursing is proud to announce that Kandyce Brennan, DNP, CNM, has been awarded a 2024 Changemakers in Family Planning grant through the Society for Family Planning. Dr. Brennan’s project, titled “An AI-Powered Decision Aid for Advancing Women’s Health Choices,” aims to enhance informed contraceptive choices among women, particularly in underserved rural areas.

Dr. Brennan’s work will focus on developing and evaluating an AI-powered decision aid that offers personalized, evidence-based contraceptive counseling. This innovative tool will utilize a patient-centered contraceptive care framework, making it easier for women to make informed decisions about their health.

To guide her through this project, Dr. Brennan will be mentored by Maureen Baker, PhD, CNL, CHSE, an Associate Professor at the UNC School of Nursing, and Christine Dehlendorf, MD, MAS. Their expertise will support Dr. Brennan in achieving the project’s goals over the 18-month grant period.

The Changemakers in Family Planning grant is designed to support scholars of color in expanding their research skills and expertise. This initiative seeks to address institutionalized racism in the science of family planning by fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research community focused on abortion and contraception. Recipients of this grant receive salary support, mentorship, and networking opportunities, including complimentary membership to the Society for Family Planning and attendance at their annual meetings.
