Brennan receives the 2024 Booth Community Service and Outreach Award

Congratulations to Kandyce Brennan, DNP, CNM, the 2024 recipient of the Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Award.

Brennan was selected for her Health Education and Literacy (HEAL) initiative, which addresses the critical gap in health literacy among underserved communities in Orange County, North Carolina. Through tailored education and support directly from healthcare providers in an approachable manner, this initiative aims to demystify health diagnoses, treatments, and care strategies.

The initiative involves UNC School of Nursing undergraduate nursing students and Adult-Gerontology/Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students. HEAL works with the Orange County Department on Aging, UNC Physicians Network, El Centro Hispano, and El Futuro as well as interprofessional collaborations with UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Gillings School of Global Public Health to offer a comprehensive health education and support system.

The Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Fund was established by the Booths in 2016 to support faculty and students who wish to engage in community service to better the health and welfare of North Carolinians.

Kandyce is the sixth recipient, following Natalia Villegas Rodriguez, PhD, MSN, RN, IBCLC, FAAN, and Susana Barroso, PhD, RN, in 2023, Rhonda Lanning, DNP, CNM, LCCE, IBCLC, RN, in 2022, Marianne Cockroft, PhD, RN, in 2021, Jean Davison, DNP, RN, FNP-C, in 2019 and Rebecca Kitzmiller, PhD, MHR, RN, BC, in 2018.
