Hillman Scholar in Nursing Innovation, Cameron Ulmer, was selected for the highly competitive O’Neill & Hyer Policy Internship through the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). This prestigious 8-week internship, based in Washington, D.C., will take place this summer and will provide Cameron with valuable experience in legislative and regulatory affairs focused on improving the well-being of older adults across America.
During the internship, Cameron will work alongside established health policy professionals and become integrated into the daily operations of the GSA Office of Professional Affairs. Her responsibilities will include collaborating with health policy coalitions, sharing cutting-edge health science with policymakers, and keeping GSA’s more than 7,000 members informed about key policy developments leading up to the 2026 midterm elections.
“I’m honored to be selected as a 2026 O’Neill & Hyer Policy Intern with the Gerontological Society of America,” said Ulmer. “With the midterm elections approaching, this is a pivotal time for legislative activity, and I’m excited to gain firsthand experience at the intersection of research and policy. I’m especially grateful for this opportunity as it supports my goal to be a nurse researcher advancing evidence-based policies to improve the lives of older adults.”
This opportunity is also supported by the Hillman Scholar Policy Fellowship, made possible through the generous funding of Carolina Nursing alumna Millyn Gaaserud, BSN ’88, MBA. The fellowship was created to provide Hillman Scholars with unique experiential learning opportunities in health policy and apprenticeships with nurse and policy leaders during their doctoral studies.
