Carolina Nursing awarded SDSS seed grant for AI-based women’s health tool

Principal Investigator, Kandyce Brennan, DNP, CNM, along with her team members Rachel McInerney, DNP, FNP-BC, Maureen Baker, PhD, CNL, CHSE, and Jonas Swartz from Duke University Health, have been awarded a $35,000 seed grant from the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS). Their funded project, titled “An AI-Based Shared Decision-Making Tool for Promoting Women’s Health,” aims to improve healthcare decision-making for women by using artificial intelligence.

As healthcare increasingly shifts toward digital resources, many people turn to AI and online platforms for information, widening the healthcare equity gap, especially in rural and underserved communities. This project seeks to address that gap, particularly for women seeking reproductive health services.

The team is developing an AI-based web tool designed to function as a shared decision-making aid, focused on family planning and reproductive health. Set to pilot in fall 2024, the tool will help users make informed healthcare choices by simulating human-like conversations using natural language processing technology. The chatbot will also create personalized health profiles that users can share with their healthcare providers.

This innovative approach incorporates clinical standards, reproductive justice principles, and holistic nursing practices to promote patient-centered care. The goal is to empower patients with knowledge, improve their satisfaction, and reduce potential provider bias.
