Emilie “Emie” Price, a Doctor of Nursing Practice student at the UNC School of Nursing, received the Best in Presentation award for her work on food insecurity at the 21st Annual Carolina Quality Expo on October 24.
The Carolina Quality Expo brought together hundreds of quality leaders from across the UNC Health system to showcase performance improvement initiatives. Hosted by the Office of Quality Excellence, the event featured over 75 project submissions completed within the last year, with 25 of those highlighted during the expo. The day concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating achievements in categories such as “Voice of the Customer,” “Carolina Quality,” “Collaboration is Key,” and “Data Excellence.”
Price’s award-winning project focused on addressing food insecurity among patients at the UNC Reach Enhanced Primary Care clinic, which provides services to clients with severe mental illness. Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, peer support specialists, and clinical staff, Price implemented standardized screenings for food insecurity. Patients who screened positive were connected to community resources, including guides for using SNAP and EBT benefits, food donations from faith communities, the Community Cabinet, and free cooking classes.
