The UNC School of Nursing is proud to announce that Postdoctoral Research Fellow and National Cancer Institute K00 Fellow, Natasha Burse, DrPH, MS, participated in the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) from August 5-9, 2024. The program supported the career development of early-career researchers in minority health and health disparities science.
The HDRI program offered lectures, small group discussions, mock grant reviews, and seminars focused on the etiology of health disparities, research design, methods, and intervention and implementation strategies. Participants also had the opportunity to consult with NIH scientific staff from various Institutes and Centers.
Reflecting on her experience, Dr. Burse shared, “I felt honored to be one of the very few postdoctoral scholars in the 2024 HDRI program, inspired by other early-career health disparity researchers from around the world, and more prepared to advance health disparities science. This was a valuable opportunity to discuss our research ideas and receive real-time feedback from NIMHD program officials.”
Dr. Burse’s work centers on the impact of behavioral factors, such as physical activity, on cancer survivorship among breast cancer survivors in the Black Women’s Health Study. Dr. Burse is committed to designing and implementing culturally tailored interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of Black women diagnosed with breast cancer.
